The Colonel R. M. Baker Home for Retired Ministers is a retirement community for United Methodist Clergy. The home is located at 1415 South Otterbein Avenue in Rowland Heights, California 91748.
The purpose for Col. Baker Homes is to establish, operate, and maintain independent residences for retired United Methodist clergy, and surviving spouses of qualifying residents. Housing is the only phase of care provided by Baker Homes.
PURPOSE
The "Homes" were established in 1911 through a generous gift by Colonel and Mrs. R. M. Baker, beloved members of the United Brethren Church, and through additional gifts by other individuals and local church offerings. With an abiding interest in the welfare of retired ministers, the "Homes" have sought through the years to provide residences in which they might live comfortaably and in association with other Christians at affordable cost and with maximum independence.
DESCRIPTION
A community of homes nestled snugly on 10 acres of the upper southern slopes of Walnut Valley in Rowland Heights, Baker Homes is ideally situated just 25 miles east of Los Angeles near the Pomona Freeway. Attractive shopping centers, medical facilities, parks, entertainment sites and several United Methodist churches are located in the surrounding area.
ADMISSION
Persons in elegible vocations may apply for admission to the Residency Membership Committee, who then makes its recommendation to the Board of Directors. Preference for membership is given first to members of the California-Pacific Conference, and then to members of other conferences of the United Methodist Church.
Upon approval, applicants are placed on a waiting list for the year of expected retirement. Applicants are notified of available housing according to their anticipated retirement year and application approval date. An incoming resident pays an accomodation fee (a portion of the appraised value of the home) in exchange for a lifetime occupancy contract for both spouses.
